Nuance Opens Mobile Innovation Center in Cambridge, Mass. for Expanding Research and Development Team
Innovation Hub in the Heart of Central Square will Drive Research for Voice, Natural Language, and User Experience for Phones, Tablets, Cars, TVs, PCs and Wearables
BURLINGTON, Mass., – October 30, 2013 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced it has opened a brand new mobile innovation center in the Central Square area of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The new mobile innovation center is home to the expanding Boston-area segment of Nuance’s R&D team dedicated to advancing breakthroughs in voice recognition, natural language and user interface technologies that are reinventing the relationship between people and technology.
The Nuance Cambridge Innovation Center will continue focus on a number of areas, including cross-platform, conversational interactions across a variety of devices including phones, tablets, TVs, cars, PCs and consumer electronics. The Cambridge location will advance research in many topics including voice biometrics, wearable technologies, natural language processing, contextual awareness, voice-controlled home automation and the cloud-based infrastructure that supports these rapidly maturing capabilities. Research teams will also be focused on the continued acceleration of voice recognition innovation itself across many languages and use cases, leveraging deep belief learning neural networks.
Nuance is currently hiring for a number of positions within its R&D team, working on active projects that include advancing voice recognition and natural language understanding through neural networks and deep learning, natural language processing, language modeling, signal processing, adaptation, high-performance computing, language development, and much more. Innovation is core to Cambridge, making the area one that is perfect for Nuance’s R&D expansion. Notably, Central Square has a rich history of blending culture, the arts, education and technology, as evidenced by its recognition as a Cultural District by the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2012. Centrally located between Kendall Square/MIT and Harvard University, Nuance expects to hire dozens of R&D experts over the coming months to support the exponential growth in market demand for conversational, intelligent systems.
“Cambridge has a history built on technological innovation and visionary thinking, and is the ideal place for Nuance to expand its commitment to mobile technology,” said Michael Thompson, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “We’re excited to extend Nuance’s presence to a respected location throughout the technology community, and we’re thrilled to be joining and contributing to the vibrant culture Cambridge has developed over the years.”
