Summit Health Accelerates ICD-10 Training with Nuance Clintegrity 360 Computer-Assisted Coding, CDI and Physician Education

2 Hospitals and 28 Practices Leverage Nuance's Comprehensive ICD-10 Solution and Services to Create Accurate Documentation and Coding

BURLINGTON, Mass., – October 21, 2013Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that Summit Health, headquartered in Chambersburg, Pa., has deployed Clintegrity 360™│Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) as well as Clintegrity 360│Clinical Document Improvement (CDI) with specialized physician education as part of an ICD-10 readiness strategy that focuses on improved clinical accuracy of documentation from the start. Summit Health is using Nuance’s broad approach to ICD-10 readiness across both its inpatient and outpatient settings, leveraging technology to deliver efficiencies today, while identifying gaps in documentation accuracy and training staff from clinicians to coders on tips and tools they need to be adequately trained before the October 2014 deadline.

“We are using Nuance for computer-assisted coding and clinical documentation improvement, two very important foundations that an organization needs to embrace as part of their ICD-10 strategy,” reports John Lucabaugh, vice president of health information management (HIM), Summit Health. “CAC is a key component of ICD-10 readiness, but what I’m most excited about is the vision of blending CDI and CAC into one workflow and solution for the greatest impact on ICD-10.”

Summit Health, ranked among the top 20 percent of best-performing health systems in the country, is building a solid foundation for clinical accuracy at Summit Health’s Chambersburg and Waynesboro facilities. Summit is using Nuance as its main source for ICD-10 training of all clinical and non-clinical staff using the Nuance educational platform to ensure that all Summit personnel, such as HIM coding, billing and general operational staff, are prepared.

Nuance’s powerful tools can assess individual coder competency, pinpoint areas individuals need to work on the most, and then assign specific lessons to prepare them for ICD-10 in the short months before the regulation takes effect. Additionally, Summit is relying on Nuance’s specialized physician education to prepare all medical staff working in its two hospitals and 28 physician practices for new charting requirements of ICD-10.

“Nuance has been a great partner in helping our staff and organization transition to a world of increased complexity, declining reimbursement payments and changes stemming from healthcare reform,” Lucabaugh adds. “Our objective is to raise awareness and to have managers and clinicians create complete and specific documentation where codes are derived, which translates to efficiencies, improved quality of care and regulatory compliance.”

  • HIM and clinical documentation specialist professionals at Chambersburg Hospital and Waynesboro Hospital have worked collaboratively on compliance and clinical integrity to realize significant improvements. Waynesboro has achieved a 12 percent case mix correction while Chambersburg, the larger facility, has realized an 8 percent case mix correction since implementing the CDI program.
  • Nuance’s CAC supports both ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding and simplifies the process for coders by bringing together relevant documentation and reference material at their fingertips.
  • Summit inpatient coders are showing productivity gains of up to 35 percent using Nuance’s CAC. Both experienced and novice coders are seeing significant productivity enhancements.
  • Nuance CDI experts are auditing documentation of physicians to help them be more specific and detailed for ICD-9 and in preparation for ICD-10.
  • Physicians also use Nuance Dragon Medical 360 │Network Edition to dictate patient charts directly into the Meditech electronic health record in real-time generating more complete documentation while simultaneously improving physician productivity.
  • As part of their long–term vision to improve the quality of clinical documentation, Summit Health plans to also implement additional Nuance healthcare solutions including Dragon Medical 360 | eScription and PowerScribe 360.

“We are very excited that Summit Health shares our vision of re-inventing the clinical documentation process starting with complete, clinically accurate and compliant physician documentation at the point of care,” said Peter Durlach, senior vice president of marketing and product strategy, Nuance Communications. “In this time of reduced reimbursements, increased compliance mandates and value-based payment models, leading provider organizations are realizing that to survive and prosper, they need solutions that really connect their physicians with their coders and quality teams to get everyone speaking the same language.”

Clintegrity 360│Computer-Assisted Coding is part of the larger Clintegrity 360 offering that provides healthcare providers with an intelligent web-based system for computer-assisted coding, CDI and compliance. Clintegrity revolutionizes the clinical documentation process with a simpler, end-to-end solution that provides a more natural and efficient way for clinicians to rapidly create more complete and compliant clinical documentation within their existing workflow while simultaneously improving coding and downstream revenue cycle and quality reporting processes.
